OLD SCHOOL BMX REUNION 2013

Both of our OG Riders went to the 2013 Old School Reunion at Woodward west where they got to spend 3 days shredding up one of the greatest places on earth with the godfathers of BMX. It took me a while to post this up but here are some pictures from their weekend there! Some of the big names there were Mat Hoffman, Kevin Robinson, Ron Wilkerson, Coco Zurita, Jose Yanez, and the list goes on. I can’t even imagine being in a room with one of those guys, let alone pretty much every one of them you can think of at once. BMX is awesome.

Shane is one of the nicest 15 year olds you will meet. He’s always smiling, and has a lot of bike skills. We first met him at lil Ryan’s 9th Birthday Party and soon after he joined the team. With a knack for both park, street, and dirt, and a great attitude, Shane is the perfect role model to have around! We are so thankful for the time we had with Shane and all that he contributed to FDV. As most of you know Shane rides for our friends over at Lil Mikey Beeswax (best ledge wax out there!) and STF Bike Shop (check out their new apparel!) and we didn’t want to hold him down from unleashing his full potential with those guys. We wish Shane the best and can’t wait to see how much he progresses in the coming years, he’s one to watch! Thank You Shane for everything!

TEAM RIDER ROBBIE DECELLE: 2nd Place VANS AM Contest

This past weekend Team Rider Robbie DeCelle went down to SoCal for the Vans Am Contest in Orange, CA at the Vans Skatepark. He killed it as usual and ended up taking 2nd place in the Advanced Class! We are so proud of Robbie, glad to see he’s back killing the contests!

Nick Noble has been with FDV for a good chunk of our existence. I don’t remember exactly when he came aboard but he was definitely one of the first riders on the team. Nick always brought good ideas to FDV along with his amazing riding with what seemed (and still seems) to be endless lines of tricks and steeze at crazy height.

A little while ago Nick was picked up by our good friends over at Swear Crew Clothing (Check them out here) and he will be stepping down from his spot with FDV in order to continue his journey with them and allow sponsorship opportunities for other riders.

Nick will always be a part of the FDV Family and we are so excited to see what he does next. Thank you Nick Noble for everything you brought to FDV and your dedication to helping us succeed.

This weekend I traveled to Woodward West with my little brother to compete at the Bell Certified Slam Contest, a contest put on by Jon Faure and Bell Helmets to promote wearing certified bike helmets. I met up with a couple of the FDV Team riders including Josh Ellsworth, Ryan Slusher, and Squirrel. The contest was a huge success, and everyone killed it! It started out with the 11 and under novice class, where my brother took 2nd, this being his first competition. Next, our littlest team rider Ryan took 2nd place in the advanced class. Josh took 6th in the 12-14 Novice class throwing down a sick no footer to no footed can over the box. Next up was myself in the boys 15-17 novice class where much to my surprise, I actually landed everything in my run except my flip (first time maybe?) and then even more to my surprise, proceeded to place 2nd. A little bit later I rode again, this time in the girls class where I took 1st. The next day was the OG class, where Squirrel placed 1st with a dialed run including a big 1 footed X Up air at the end of his run. Lil Ryan concluded the day where he competed in the pro class, throwing down some big 540’s, almost getting them. Overall it was a great trip, amazing riding went down, and we got to see a lot of riders from all over! Thanks Jon, Bell, Woodward West, and everyone who made this contest possible!

FDV ON THE PODIUM IN TORONTO!

This weekend two FDV Clothing Riders, Nick Bruce and Mike Varga traveled to Toronto Canada to compete in the Toronto Jam. I wasn’t able to be there, but I was given updates from the boys as well as watched the whole thing go down on live stream. The competition was announced by Darryl Nau (right picture), and Brett Banaseiwicz was in the house judging, handing out prizes, and getting stoked! So great to see him out and about and back with the BMX Fam.

Saturday started off with qualifying, and the boys killed it! 360 double whips to bar, flairwhips, flair inverts to name a few. The day died down and Nick ended up qualifying 3rd, and Mike 13th. 24 riders moved on (don’t know the exact original number but it had to be around 40.)

Day two, today, was pro finals, and both boys were in it. Again they both killed it, throwing some insane tricks. Nick Bruce ended up with 8th place and Mike got on the podium with a 2nd place next to Glen Salyers (1st) and Daniel Sandoval (3rd). Quite a feat for being only 16 years old!

So proud of both of our riders this weekend, you guys are rad!

While Derek Dorame has only been part of the team for a short time, he has made a huge impact! Derek works at Rob and Charlie’s Bike Shop in New Mexico, and was the key player in getting FDV product into the shop, our first official distributor. I can’t tell you how stoked I am on that, as it’s a big step for FDV Clothing. We are sad to say that we are losing such a great team member and rider, but are excited to keep up with Derek’s future as he continues his BMX journey. He will still deal FDV Clothing through Rob and Charlie’s, so if you are ever in the area, make sure to check out the shop! Nick Bruce. You may have heard this name popping up a lot in the past year, and for good reason! Nick has been absolutely killing it! He is the first rider in Free Flow history to have won the finals in both dirt AND park, earning him spots to compete in the invite only Dew Tour Competition alongside the pro’s. And he didn’t do all that bad against them either! Nick placed 6th in the SF Dew Tour Dirt Prelims, surpassing some of today’s biggest riders.

That is where I first saw him. I always like to watch the Free Flow because there are so many talented up and coming riders. So when I sat in the bleachers at this years SF Dew Tour watching the dirt go down, I couldn’t of been more stoked to see this Free Flow winner actually giving the pros a run for their money!

A few weeks later I googled him to see if he had any edits and found his latest one, an update from his time in San Fran. Not only was I impressed with his riding, but I was impressed with his attitude as well.

Not too long after that I hit him up and was super excited when I got a reply! I wanted to talk with him further about FDV, because I had already seen what an amazing rider he was, but wanted to make sure he fit the most important qualification to ride for us: a good, positive attitude. Well let me tell you, it didn’t take long to figure out Nick had both. Amazing skills on the bike, super nice guy, positive, and someone who younger kids could look up to. We want to keep our company friendly for all ages, and promote BMX in a positive way so that kind of thing is a must for us.

With that said, I am absolutely honored to have Nick on our team, and can’t wait to see more from him! Keep an eye out for some photos/bio coming soon, as well as his Welcome Edit. In the meantime, check out his update from SF last October.

Welcome New OG Team Rider: Jeremy Kemp

When I first started going to Ramp Rats, I used to see some OG guy there yelling at scooter kids, and shredding really hard on the bike. It had to have been at least 5 months until I formally met him, and he was a supporter of FDV from that day.

I don’t know what I did to deserve such a rad fan, but Jeremy would buy all of our products when I brought them with me, and was constantly repping. At that time I didn’t really have an OG team in place and had to keep our riders down to a minimum so I could really support them, so Jeremy was sort of an “unofficial” team rider.

Recently, like I said in the previous entry, Squirrel, another OG rider came to me about OG Riders, and that’s when I decided to make another team. It was only fitting to have Jeremy be one of our first two additions.

Jeremy can usually be found at Ramp Rats chasing away scooter kids, filming BMXers, motivating us to do rad new tricks, and shredding his own bike. We are stoked to have him as part of the FDV family as a rider, and friend. Nicest guy you could meet, unless you ride a scooter. I (and a lot more riders)can attribute a lot of my progression to him, so thank you Jeremy!

We are hoping to get together and film a welcome edit for this rad dude soon, but for now take a look and enjoy his new bio HERE to learn a little more about our newest OG Team Rider.

Damian “Squirrel” Schinella: Welcome to FDV OG BMX Edit

We announced our new OG BMX Team a couple months back, when we were contacted by Squirrel. We had another OG rider who wasn’t “officially” part of FDV yet, so we decided to make an OG Team and welcomed both Squirrel and Jeremy Kemp (Bio/Edit coming soon!)

Squirrel kills it on the bike, going fast, busting huge airs, and throwing all sorts of tricks! He has been riding for over 25 years, and is a super cool guy! We are super stoked to have him repping FDV, and equally stoked about the birth of our new OG Team and it’s riders.

Ever wonder what happens to the money we make? Read this article to find out!

Since day one, the very beginning of FDV Clothing, every single penny that we have made has gone right back into the company. Sure, we don’t make that much, but we have used all of it to get more shirts, make new designs, stickers, hats, buy our banner, and most important to us, make just enough to be able to hook up our team riders, and donate product to contests, jams, and events.

Our ultimate goal is to spread our love of BMX with the rest of the world, through our riding and products, but also to be able to support our riders and the BMX community. At this point, with the small amount that we make (not to be confused with a complaint) the furthest we can go is to hook up our riders with what we can, and donate as much as we can to all of the amazing events people put on to show their love and support of BMX. We would love to see our products in shops not because it means more money, but because it means we can offer more support. We will have more resources to help people, and we know that someday, with the help of our amazing supporters, this can all happen.

Thanks to everyone for the support you have given us since day one, and all you have done to help us grow not as a brand, but as a family all dedicated to the same, one thing. BMX.

Kenny Slusher, one of our team rider’s dad, and a good friend, is putting on a jam at Epic Indoor Skatepark to raise money for more bike features, such as box jumps and more.

I had the opportunity to work with him on the flyer, and see the jam come to life from the very beginning stages of ideas. It has been a very educational trip, and I am super excited to see the turn out!

We are sponsoring this event along with many other great companies as you can see on the flyer, and will be riding, selling product, and having a good time!

It’s going to be a fun event with three different comps, divisions for all levels, food, booths, riding, a DJ, and more!

Second Tour de Sac!

Next week we are making a trip down to Sacramento again! The weather was all clear, then back to supposed rain, and now partially clear again so we are hoping it clears up for us! Everyone do a rain dance for Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday!

First we will be hitting Epic Indoor Skatepark in Rocklin, CA on Tuesday, April 10th. They are working on integrating bikes into their park, and every Tuesday they have a 4 hour bike night, so we will be there from 7-11 PM. Come down and shred, and pick up some gear!

The next day, Wednesday we hope to hit up Power Inn Skatepark (Also known as Granite) most likely around 1 PM. Probably staying till around 10 or so as there are lights. Once again we will have gear for sale, and a fun time with some team riders.

WE WILL HAVE SOME NEW ITEMS THAT HAVE NEVER BEEN SEEN BEFORE! KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR THEM!

Bryce Tryon, Moving On

Most of you will know the name Bryce Tryon. If you don’t, he is an amazing shredder. The things he can do on a bike are outstanding for an 11 year old. We had the privilege of having Bryce on our team for a while, and it was a great experience. Not only is his riding amazing, but he is just a super cool kid overall. While he was on the team, he got picked up by some sick companies such as Cult Bikes, Vans/Pro Tec, and Lil Mikey’s Beeswax. Just recently, Bryce got picked up by one of my favorite companies, Fox! I am very excited for him, but unfortunately that means that he can no longer ride for any other clothing companies. We regret that we can no longer have the pleasure of having Bryce on our team, but are excited to see what happens for him in the future! I just want to thank Bryce and his parents, Leon and Deanna for all the support you have given me, and Bryce, you deserve all of these amazing things that are happening for you! Keep a eye on this guy, cause he is constantly progressing and throwing crazy things that you would not expect out of an 11 year old. Once again, thank you so much to the Tryon’s for everything you guys have done for me!

Daniel Shulte Injury Update

Team rider Daniel Shulte has been out with an injury for a while, so I decided to interview him to get some updates. Give it a look....

What is your injury and how did it happen?

Well, I broke 4 of the 5 bones in my foot that connect my ankle to my toes... the one connected to my big toe is fine. Also, I tore some tendons and my foot is a wee bit crooked now.... I shattered it all when I was riding at a skatepark in Nevada for my birthday, hanging out with my friend Justin. I decided to flip out of a steep bowl, but I was under rotating, so I bailed and my foot landed right on the coping and broke in half.

How long are you out for?

The total time I was given before I could ride again was about five months, due to the complications of swelling and surgery... almost 3 months have passed, and my doctor said I should be riding again in about a month. So I guess the total is about 4 months

What does this kind of injury cost in medical bills?

Originally, the surgery was going to cost a buttload of money.... the hospital bill was $55,000. BUT my mom applied for medical since I have no insurance, and we're hooked up right now so it'll only cost about 2 grand.

So I hear people call you Robofoot... Why is that?

I've had numerous bionic improvements in my foot since I broke it... hence the name Robofoot. 4 metal plates (one on each broken bone), and 16 pins to hold them in place. It took a lot of work to get one bone together, because it broke in two places and was shoved into the one next to it.

Is there anything else you would like to add? Any words of wisdom?

Well as my good buddy Jeremy Kemp always says, stay strong! No matter what the injury is, BMXers always get up. It might take a while, but you always end up riding as good as or better than you used to. That's what has kept me going.... That and patience.....

FDV Clothing Tour de Sac!

On January 3rd and 4th, I will be in Sacramento with a crew of FDV riders and friends armed with some new FDV gear. We will be going to Epic Indoor Skatepark on January 3rd started at 7pm (Cost is $20 for BMX only night from 7-11).

Then the next day, January 4th, we will be going to a couple different parks around the Sacramento area including Rusch, Tanz, and possibly another one.

The details on which parks and what times for January 4th are not quite set yet, so if you go like our Facebook page HERE, you can keep updated with our whereabouts during the trip.

We will be selling shirts, giving out stickers, and having a good time riding bikes! Come out and ride! This is our first little “event”, so I’m super stoked on that!

Skatepark Meeting with the City/County of Sonoma....FDV REPRESENT!

So tonight was the skatepark meeting. Sonoma BMXers rolled up 14 deep (not everyone was included in this photo). And that’s just the people who were able to make it, there are lots more of us. The meeting went well, I think a lot of questions were answered, and many ideas were presented. The BMX people had a strong voice, and we were able to get our point across. Ideally, we would want to be allowed back into the skatepark, but that is not going to happen. So now, this new idea of dirt jumps has been put into place. We are all willing to dedicate time, and physical labor to make these jumps happen, and with the help of some people from the City/County, I think that we can do this! We are really hoping for more of “freestyle” jumps, as opposed to a race track or pump track. Thanks to all the BMXers (and even skaters, parent, family, and friends) who came out tonight to support this issue, as well as Rob Wilson from Sonoma Old School Skate and Surf (http://www.skatesos.com ) for all the support and making this idea start to happen, Brandon Bredo of Sonoma County Regional Parks, Sergeant Dave Thompson and Deputy Tom Howard of Sonoma Police Department, and Milenka Bates, Director of Public works. The Future of BMX in Sonoma, Decided on Dec 7th 2011! You Can Help!

On December 7th at 7pm (at the Sonoma Boys and Girls Club) the City is holding a meeting to discuss the future of the Sonoma skatepark, and surrounding area.

For those of you that don't know, they are planning on re surfacing the skatepark, and completely outlawing bikes. By that I mean they will be fining heavily.

BUT

They are also saying there is a possibility of building a nice pump track or dirt jumps (see Folsom bike park)

I plan on going to this meeting a talking, because I think it will help them understand who they are building for, especially if we express how much BMX means to us. I think that it would be really good to get as many BMXers to that meeting as possible, so they can see all the youth in Sonoma that ride, and how much we really need a park. Even if you don’t want to talk, just being there to represent would be awesome!

I talked to Rob Wilson from Sonoma Old School and there is NO WAY that bikes will ever be allowed in the skatepark, so we might as well fight for those jumps so we have somewhere to ride. Not like angry mob fight, let’s just show em were here, BMX is our life, and we would really appreciate the jumps.

Dane Searls, Gone But Not Forgotten

We lost a legend today. He changed BMX dirt jumping, doing it big in every way. Our thoughts go out to Dane’s friends and family. He will be greatly missed, but NEVER FORGOTTEN. RIP Dane.
